Why Girona

Unbeatable geographical location: 37 minutes from Barcelona and 3.5 hours from Madrid

Girona is extremely well-connected to the rest of Spain and Europe. Just 100 km from Barcelona, 60 km from the French border and only 30 km from the Costa Brava, Girona boasts an unbeatable geographical location. Air, rail and road networks provide excellent transport connections to the city, without the traffic experienced in other more densely populated cities but with all the same advantages. The arrival of the high-speed rail line has completed the transport options, linking Girona with Barcelona in 37 min, Madrid in 3.5 hours and Paris in 5.5 hours.

200 km of coastline, at the foot of the Pyrenees

Girona, which is the provincial capital, lies between the sea and the mountains and offers a broad range of different landscapes. Only 30 minutes away from the city, the Costa Brava is home to authentic fishing villages, coves with crystalline waters and stunning natural parks. While, just over an hour away, the Pyrenees offer a unique historic legacy of hermitages, convents, churches and some of Spain's best ski resorts.

Historic city

Wandering Girona's ancient streets is a continuous journey of discovery around its hidden corners, both large and small. The Old Jewish Quarter still retains the magic of the maze of narrow streets found in the city's Historic Quarter, which also boasts many other places steeped in history such as the houses over the River Onyar, the basilica of Sant Fèlix, the old city walls, the Arab Baths, the Romanesque monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants and the Cathedral (14th-17th century), a spectacular building with the widest Gothic nave in the world.

Global tourism recognition by prestigious international magazines

Girona is one of the cities with the most personality in Catalonia. This has been recognised by some of the world's most important publications, such as the US travel guide Frommer's, which included the city of Girona on its list of the Top 10 Places to Visit in 2012. The magazine National Geographic Traveler, in its March 2012 edition, also placed Girona and its Flower Time Festival on a list of worldwide destinations to visit in spring. While, in 2015, Trivago rated Girona as the city with the best online reputation.

Unique cuisine and the best restaurant in the world

The province of Girona is one of the world's most important gastronomic zones and it boasts great culinary innovation and dynamism. There are almost 20 Michelin stars spread across the region. Some of the world's top restaurants are located in the city, such as El Celler de Can Roca, which has three Michelin stars, and Massana, which has one Michelin star. Another culinary reference is Ferran Adrià's El Bulli, which has now closed as a restaurant to become a foundation.

The city has more than 700 rooms available in 3 and 4-star hotels and up to 482 more rooms can be found within a 15 km radius, bringing the total hotel capacity to over 1,200 rooms. Most of the city's hotels are located less than ten minutes' walk from the Girona Conference Centre.
