More than one hundred professionals in ophthalmology from all over Europe will gather this Friday at the Girona Conference Centre on Retina Meeting, organized by the Ophthalmology department of Dr. Josep Trueta Hospital in Girona. Retina specialists from hospitals of the province of Girona as well as the Hopital Josep Trueta will be part of this event. On particular note is the presence of leading ophthalmologists in Europe such as Rocío Blanco-Garavito (Paris, France), Nicole Horch (Olten, Switzerland), Marta Latasiewicz (Oxford, England), Maurizio Battaglia (Milan, Italy) and Alfredo Adán Hospital Clínico de Barcelona). All of them will contribute to update the treatments that are currently applied in lesions and diseases of the retina which is an area of ophthalmology that has experienced important advances in recent years, especially in the field of surgery.

One of the main affectations is age-related macular degeneration, which is especially present in the population over 70 years and is currently one of the leading causes of blindness. The new treatments through drugs injected directly into the eye allow a great improvement of the vision, and the various hospital centers of Girona will contribute their experience in this area in this Conference. The Ophthalmology department of the Dr. Josep Trueta Hospital performs 50 treatments weekly to combat macular degeneration, which represents more than 2,000 injections per year.

This Day is part of the inter-professional meetings organized each quarter by the Trueta Ophthalmology service to deepen its subspecialties. So far there have been specific sessions on glaucoma, ophthalmological urgencies, cornea, orbit and oculoplasty, always with the participation of internationally recognized professionals.
